Transmission shifts soft even after installing a tune?
A transmission that shifts softly even after installing a transmission tune, can indicate several issues. The soft shifts especially under load is a huge indication of worn out clutches, valve body wear issues or other potential causes include low or contaminated transmission fluid, faulty pressure control solenoids, or a torque converter issue. Common misconception is that a transmission tune will fix my transmission is wish full thinking and will only prolong the inevitable where transmission needs rebuilt.
A transmission fluid flush or replacement might improve the shifting, while more serious problems like worn clutch packs or valve body issues require a repair or rebuild.
722.6 5g transmission will start to shift softer and softer until it starts slipping or shift flaring is a very common when transmission has worn out clutches and or leaking internal clutch pack seals and or worn valve body.
Age of these transmissions are 20+ years old and clutch apply seals/orings start to get hard or flatten out and start leaking and Tcu no longer can compensate and drop out of spec and start to either slip/flare/soft slipping feeling shifts.
Possible Causes:
-
Low or Dirty Transmission Fluid:
Insufficient or contaminated fluid can lead to soft or delayed shifts. A fluid flush and refill might resolve this.
-
Worn Clutches and or leaking seals:
In automatic transmissions, worn-out clutches can cause slipping and soft shifts and also age related problems like clutch pack apply piston seals start leaking and cause slow engagement and cause soft slipping shift then finally a complete failure of clutches.
-
Valve Body Issues:
.
The valve body controls fluid pressure and shift timing. If it’s faulty, worn overlap sleeves and or valves, it can cause soft or delayed shifts.
